Conventions

Centrally located in the Las Vegas Valley at 3150 Paradise Road, Las Vegas, NV, the Las Vegas Convention Center offers convenient and quick access to thousands of guest rooms all within walking distance of the Convention Center. One of the most modern and functional facilities in the world, operated by the LVCVA, The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, is well known among industry professionals for its flexibility.

In addition to more than two million square feet of exhibit space, there are well over a hundred meeting rooms with a seating capacity ranging from 20 to 2,500. A grand lobby and registration area links existing exhibit halls with new exhibit and meeting rooms, and allowing simultaneous set-up, break-down and multiple events display.

History

A favourite recreation destination for millions of visitors, in the early 1950s, however, community leaders realized the recurring nature of tourism caused a significant decline in the number of visitors during the weekdays. A new market was identified in order to attract more visitors to the area during the slow periods…convention attendees.

Elected officials were convinced that convention business was vital to the growth of the city and went before the Nevada State Legislature for funding. In 1955, the State Legislature decided to finance the Clark County Fair and Recreation Board with moneys acquired from a room tax levied on hotel and motel properties in Clark County. This revenue, paid for by tourists, allowed the Las Vegas Convention Center to be built and operated without any tax assessment on Clark County residents, letting the LVCVA begin a program of destination marketing.

On April 29, 1959, the Las Vegas Convention Center officially opened with a 20,340 square-foot rotunda, 18 meeting rooms and a 90,000 square-foot exhibit hall. In its first year of operation, the LVCVA hosted eight conventions that were attended by 22,519 delegates. In 2003, the Las Vegas Convention Center hosted more than 24,463 conventions attended by 5.6 million delegates. Increased convention attendance has resulted in additional jobs for the citizens of Southern Nevada.
