Shark Reef
Shark Reef at the Mandalay Bay Hotel
Its an underwater wonder…from shark tunnels to touch tanks, this large, $40 million aquarium, with 1.6 million gallons of seawater, gives you a real idea of the immense size some of these creatures actually are.
How Its Set Up
Visitors walk underneath the aquarium where they are totally surrounded by water and can literally touch the tanks as the sea life swims by. The touch tanks, which are accessible to younger children, are set up similar to many aquariums across the US but the animals here do not see as many visitors as other aquariums, so they tend to be more approachable. The tunnels at the aquarium have such an excellent view, there is a virtual feeling of actually being in the water with the sea life.
The Range of Sea Life
The aquarium has 2500 specimens and 100 species, of which, 12 are sharks, including Zebra Sharks, Bonnethead Sharks, and black tipped reef sharks. The other 88 species include exotic fish, reptiles and turtles. The Shark Reef has the largest display of golden saltwater crocodiles, a seriously endangered species with only 12 left in the world. Other sea life includes angelfish, moray eels, puffer fish, southern stingrays, jellyfish and green tree pythons.
Learning Experience
There are divers in the aquarium who help to educate the public about the animals and answer any questions by use of high-tech underwater communication.
