Las Vegas Natural History Museum

The Las Vegas Natural History Museum is dedicated to natural history (zoology, ethnology, archaeology, palaeontology, anthropology etc.), with concentrated emphasis on native cultures of the Southwest and Central Americas. An intimate view of the plant and animal life of The Mojave Desert region lets the visitors see a world filled with natural beauty and life.

Exhibits

The chance to see and understand its fascinating wildlife and fragile ecosystem is offered in several exhibits including a display of live snakes, lizards and desert tortoise. Exhibits on the Southern Paiute and Native Artistry illustrate man in the southwest with displays and exhibits featuring dinosaurs, fossils, marine life, Nevada wildlife and world wildlife. The past is alive in this museum with everything from fossils to an animated 35-foot Tyrannosaurus Rex.

Educational

The learning process is enhanced with an international wildlife room, multimedia and hands-on displays. One of the most popular displays contains live insects, including giant cockroaches. Through its interactive exhibits, educational programs, and the preservation of its collections, the Museum strives to instil in the public an understanding and appreciation of world wildlife and the earth's ecosystems, from the past through to the present.

Arts and Crafts

There are displays on Native American craftwork and Las Vegas history with crafts including 19th-century Mexican religious folk art, a variety of colourful dance masks of Mexico, and Native American pottery. The first part of the hall is often the highlight, with impressive travelling art exhibits. Children won't find much that's entertaining other than some glass cases containing examples of local, usually poisonous reptiles.

The Garden

Outside is a pretty garden demonstrating how attractive more desert-appropriate plants (in other words, those requiring little water) can be. You just wish the local casinos, with their lush and wasteful lawns, would take notice.
